In Italy, an electronic cigarette trial was carried out on smokers who did not want to stop using tobacco. Twelve months on from the trial, as many as 13% of the participants did not smoke normal cigarettes.

Although the trial was not advertised as a test of who could quit smoking, over 50% of the participants reduced their tobacco consumption quickly after they began to use the electronic cigarettes.

Also, according to data published in the PLOS ONE journal, the percentage who stopped smoking completely at the conclusion rivaled results attained with medication.

Although previous trials have examined electronic cigarette usage, this new trial is the 1st to monitor 100’s of smokers for twelve months.
